  3. Demonstrate proper handling, maintenance, and safety practices for racket sports equipment.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic rules, grips, and strokes of racket sports
• Importance of safety and proper attire in physical activities

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 8
• Teaching aids: Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, and Badminton racquets, balls, shuttlecocks, nets, and shoes
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• What equipment do you use for racket sports?
• Why is it important to choose the right racquet or shuttlecock?
The teacher will record their responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Guide brainstorming, clarify misconceptions, and introduce key equipment and safety concepts.
Learner’s Role:
• Share experiences with racket sports equipment.
• Participate actively in discussion.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded):

  1. Introduction to Equipment:
    • Lawn Tennis: Racquet, tennis balls, net, proper shoes, and attire (comfortable clothing allowing free movement).
    • Table Tennis: Racquet/paddle, balls, net, table, and shoes with good grip.
    • Badminton: Racquet, shuttlecock, net, proper shoes, and lightweight clothing.
    • Explain that correct equipment is essential for performance, safety, and skill development.
  2. Selection Criteria:
    • Racquet: Size appropriate for height and strength, balanced weight, comfortable grip, durable material.
    • Balls/Shuttlecock: Standard size, appropriate bounce or flight, suitable quality for training or competition.
    • Shoes: Traction on playing surface, cushioning for comfort, ankle support to prevent injuries.
    • Other gear: Nets should be properly tensioned, courts clean and safe.
  3. Practical Session:
    • Allow learners to examine, handle, and test equipment.
    • Demonstrate how to hold racquets/paddles correctly, strike balls/shuttlecock safely, and check net height.
    • Explain how different racquet types or weights affect control and power.
    • Discuss adjustments for player size, skill level, and type of game.
  4. Maintenance and Safety:
    • Checking nets for tears and proper height.
    • Storing racquets to prevent warping or damage.
    • Replacing worn grips or strings on racquets.
    • Using proper shoes to avoid slips and ankle injuries.
    • Handling shuttlecocks/balls carefully to prevent eye injuries.
    • Emphasize safety rules during practice and matches.
  5. Interactive Demonstration:
    • Show learners how to inspect equipment before use.
    • Let students practice gripping and striking in a controlled environment.
    • Discuss real-life examples of how proper equipment improves performance in local tournaments or school competitions.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Observe and handle equipment for each sport.
  • Discuss which equipment suits different players and why (e.g., height, skill level).
  • Practice basic handling and striking techniques safely.
  • Take notes on maintenance tips and safety precautions.
  • Optional: create a checklist for equipment care to use at school or home.

Assessment Checks (Expanded & Interactive):

  • Ask learners to identify one essential piece of equipment for Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, and Badminton, and explain its purpose.
  • Observe learners’ handling techniques and adherence to safety practices.
  • Ask learners to explain why proper equipment selection affects performance and reduces injury risk.
  • Optional: short quiz on equipment names, functions, and safety rules.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Highlight locally available or affordable alternatives suitable for Liberian schools (e.g., used or synthetic balls, makeshift nets).
  • Emphasize personal protective equipment, especially proper shoes and comfortable clothing.
  • Stress care and maintenance to prolong equipment lifespan and ensure safe play.
  • Reinforce that selecting the right equipment is as important as practicing skills.
  • Encourage learners to develop responsibility for their own gear in school and community settings.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher asks students to recall essential equipment and selection criteria.
• Students summarize maintenance tips and safety precautions.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers to:
• Name one essential piece of equipment for Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, and Badminton.
• Explain one criterion for selecting a racquet or shuttlecock.
• Give one safety or maintenance tip for racket sports equipment.
• Teacher collects and quickly reviews answers for understanding.
• Provide oral feedback before class ends.

Assignment (Expanded):
Follow-up Activity:
• Students create a checklist of equipment needed for a school or community racket sports session.
• Include maintenance steps and safety tips for each item.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provide labeled diagrams of equipment with functions.
• Advanced Learners: Encourage evaluation of different brands or types of racquets and their performance advantages.
• Students with Disabilities: Use adaptive or lightweight equipment, paired practice, and visual/tactile aids.
