School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 8
Date:
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 2, Period 1
Topic: Types of Endurance
Sub-topic: Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Endurance, and Local Examples

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance.
  2. Identify exercises that improve each type of endurance.
  3. Discuss examples of endurance activities in local sports and daily life.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic concepts of physical fitness
• Importance of maintaining a healthy body through regular activity

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 8
• Teaching aids: Stopwatches, cones, mats, charts, videos for demonstration
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “What activities make your heart and lungs stronger?”
• “Can you name exercises that help your muscles work for a long time without fatigue?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Lead a brief brainstorming session and clarify misconceptions about endurance.
Learner’s Role:
• Share ideas on endurance activities
• Respond verbally and actively participate in warm-up discussion

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body) (25–30 minutes)

Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain Cardiovascular Endurance: the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen during sustained physical activity. Examples: running, cycling, swimming. Discuss benefits: improved heart and lung function, increased stamina, reduced risk of lifestyle diseases.
  • Explain Muscular Endurance: the ability of muscles to perform repeated contractions over time without fatigue. Examples: planks, push-ups, sit-ups. Discuss benefits: supports prolonged activity in sports, improves posture and daily functional strength.
  • Highlight local and school-based endurance activities: football matches, traditional Liberian games (e.g., “Densu” races), school athletics, running clubs, and community fitness events.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Participate in short practical demonstrations: e.g., perform a 2-minute plank for muscular endurance or a 100-meter jog for cardiovascular endurance.
  • Discuss in small groups and list endurance activities they practice at school or in their community.
  • Share observations on how endurance affects performance in games or daily tasks.

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher asks: “Show one activity that develops cardiovascular endurance.”
  • “Demonstrate one exercise for muscular endurance.”
  • Observe participation and provide feedback on technique, effort, and form.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Cardiovascular vs. Muscular Endurance: cardiovascular endurance strengthens heart and lungs; muscular endurance strengthens muscles for repeated effort.
  • Endurance activities are essential for overall fitness and enhance performance in sports and daily life.
  • Connecting to Liberian context: traditional games, football practice, and community events encourage regular endurance training.
  • Emphasize health benefits: improved stamina, reduced fatigue, better circulation, mental alertness, and overall well-being.

Assignment:

  • Identify and list 3 cardiovascular endurance activities and 3 muscular endurance activities you do at home, school, or in your community.
  • Practice one endurance activity daily for a week and record improvements in performance or stamina.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher asks students to recall the definitions, examples, and benefits of cardiovascular and muscular endurance.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers to:

  1. Define cardiovascular endurance and give one example.
  2. Define muscular endurance and give one example.
  3. Explain why endurance is important for sports and daily activities.
Teacher collects and quickly reviews for understanding
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends
Assignment (Expanded): Students will create a 15-minute personal endurance routine including one cardiovascular and one muscular endurance exercise to practice at home or school.

Follow-up Activity: Next lesson will introduce flexibility and its role in physical fitness with practical stretching demonstrations.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Use simplified exercises, guided demonstration, and one-on-one support
• Advanced Learners: Challenge with longer or more intense endurance drills
• Students with Disabilities: Adapt exercises to ability level, provide peer or teacher support, and ensure safety
