Learning Objectives

  • Adjectives for physical traits, size, and appearance (masc./fem., singular/plural).
  • Conjugation of être + adjective, avoir, s’appeler, habiter.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Show pictures of classroom objects or items in the school.
  • Ask students: “De quelle couleur est-ce ? Quelle forme a-t-il / a-t-elle ?”
  • Students respond orally using adjectives for color, size, and shape.
    Teacher’s Role: Model correct pronunciation and sentence structure.
    Learners’ Role: Participate orally, recall prior vocabulary, describe images actively.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Step 1: Vocabulary Introduction – 5–6 minutes

Colors: bleu, rouge, vert, jaune, noir, blanc, marron, violet, orange, rose
Shapes: rond, carré, rectangulaire, triangle, ovale
Size adjectives: grand, petit, long, court, gros, mince

Teaching Strategy:

  • Teacher pronounces each word slowly; students repeat chorally, then individually.
  • Show pictures or objects corresponding to each color, shape, and size to reinforce comprehension.
  • Highlight gender and number agreement when using adjectives:
    • un livre bleu / une table bleue / des crayons rouges

Additional Examples:

  • Le ballon est rouge et rond.
  • La chaise est petite et carrée.
  • Les tables sont grandes et rectangulaires.

Practice:

  • Flashcard activity: Teacher shows object; students say color + shape + size.

Step 2: Grammar – Sentence Structures – 6–7 minutes

Key Structures:

  1. C’est + article indéfini + adjectif + noun
    • Example: C’est un gros livre bleu.
  2. Voici / Voilà + noun
    • Example: Voici un chien méchant.
  3. Il/Elle a + adjective + noun
    • Example: Il a un gros ventre.

Practice:

  • Form sentences describing classroom objects, school areas, or pictures on the board.
  • Encourage students to combine two adjectives per sentence:
    • C’est une table ronde et petite.
    • Voici un ballon rouge et lourd.

Teacher Monitoring:

  • Correct gender and number agreement.
  • Model sentences if students make errors.

 

Step 3: Oral Practice – 6–7 minutes

Pair Work:

  • Students describe objects around them using new structures.
  • Example prompts:
    • Décris ce tableau.C’est un tableau rouge et grand.
    • Décris ton sac à dos.Il est petit et bleu.

Group Activity:

  • Each group describes 3 objects or places orally; classmates guess the object/place.
  • Encourage full sentences with color, size, and shape:
    • La bibliothèque est grande et rectangulaire.

Step 4: Matching and Written Practice – 6–7 minutes

Matching Exercise:

  • Match adjectives to nouns respecting gender and number:
    • un sac → bleu
    • une chaise → petite
    • des crayons → rouges

Written Sentences:

  • Describe classroom items or school areas using full sentences.
  • Examples:
    • C’est une petite table ronde.
    • Voici un ballon rouge.
    • La bibliothèque a des livres grands et lourds.

Teacher Monitoring:

  • Check sentence structure, adjective agreement, and spelling.

 

Step 5: Integrative Practice – 5–6 minutes

Activity:

  • Describe a classroom or school area combining size, color, and shape.
  • Pair Work:
    • Student A describes, Student B draws based on the description.
  • Example Description:
    • C’est une grande porte bleue. Voici un tableau noir et rectangulaire. La bibliothèque est grande et marron.

Optional Extension:

  • Students write a short paragraph (4–5 sentences) describing their classroom, playground, or favorite school area.

 

Assessment (Formative, during lesson)

Oral:

  • Students describe objects or places using correct vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Teacher checks for adjective agreement and proper structure.

Written:

  • Students write sentences or short paragraphs describing objects or areas.
  • Check for gender/number agreement, correct adjectives, and sentence accuracy.
