Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Review and correctly form the future tense and futur proche for regular verbs.
  2. Apply the future tense in letters (e.g., Je t’écrirai demain) and telephone conversations (e.g., Nous organiserons la fête samedi).
  3. Compose short letters using future tense and polite invitation expressions.
  4. Role-play telephone conversations asking and answering questions using interrogatives: où, quand, combien, comment, pourquoi.
  5. Consolidate oral and written communication skills with polite expressions and correct grammar usage.

 

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Greetings, introductions, invitations, nationality, profession, age, articles, pronouns, numbers 1–1000.
  • Present tense of s’appeler, être, avoir, habiter.
  • Writing and responding to letters, making polite phone calls, and using invitation phrases.
  • Future tense of regular verbs (-er, -ir, -re) and basic polite expressions.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Quick oral review: future tense sentences from Week 10.
  • Teacher asks: “How do we tell someone what we will do in French?” and “How do you form futur proche?”
  • Students give examples orally.

Teacher’s Role: Prompt students, model sentences, correct pronunciation and grammar.
Learners’ Role: Participate actively, recall prior knowledge, give examples.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Step 1: Review Future Tense & Future Proche – 6–7 minutes

Teaching Points:

  • Futur simple (future tense) conjugation for regular verbs:
    • -er verbs: je parlerai, tu parleras, il/elle parlera, nous parlerons, vous parlerez, ils/elles parleront
    • -ir verbs: je finirai, tu finiras, il/elle finira, nous finirons, vous finirez, ils/elles finiront
    • -re verbs: j’attendrai, tu attendras, il/elle attendra, nous attendrons, vous attendrez, ils/elles attendront
  • Futur proche formation: aller + infinitive
    • Examples: je vais écrire, tu vas téléphoner, il/elle va organiser, nous allons inviter, vous allez préparer, ils/elles vont venir

Model Sentences in Context:

  • Je t’écrirai demain. → I will write to you tomorrow
  • Nous organiserons la fête samedi. → We will organize the party on Saturday
  • Je vais téléphoner à Paul cet après-midi. → I am going to call Paul this afternoon
  • Ils vont venir à mon anniversaire samedi. → They are going to come to my birthday on Saturday

Practice:

  • Oral drill: Students repeat futur simple and futur proche conjugations in chorale and individually
  • Teacher asks students to make short sentences orally:
    • Quand écriras-tu à ton ami ?Je lui écrirai demain.
    • Qui va organiser la fête ?Nous allons organiser la fête.

 

Step 2: Integrative Letter Practice – 6–7 minutes

Activity:

  • Students compose short letters (4–5 sentences) using:
    • Invitation phrases (Je t’invite à …)
    • Polite expressions (J’espère que tu pourras venir)
    • Future tense verbs (futur simple or futur proche)

Examples for Guidance:

  • Cher Paul,
    Je t’invite à mon anniversaire samedi. J’espère que tu pourras venir. Je t’écrirai demain pour confirmer. La fête commencera à 16 heures. Amicalement, Aminata
  • Chère Fatou,
    Je vais organiser une petite cérémonie chez moi ce vendredi. J’espère que tu vas pouvoir venir. Nous allons préparer des gâteaux et des boissons. Je t’appellerai demain pour plus de détails. Bien à toi, Paul

  • Circulate to check sentence formation, verb tense, vocabulary, and politeness
  • Provide corrective feedback immediately

 

Step 3: Telephone Role-Play Using Interrogatives – 6–7 minutes

Teaching Points:

  • Review interrogative words: (where), quand (when), combien (how many), comment (how), pourquoi (why)
  • Polite phone phrases: Allô ?, Puis-je parler à … ?, C’est de la part de …

Model Dialogue:

  • A: Allô ? Puis-je parler à Aminata ?
  • B: Oui, un instant.
  • A: Où aura lieu la fête ?
  • B: Elle aura lieu à Monrovia samedi.
  • A: À quelle heure commence-t-elle ?
  • B: Elle commence à 16 heures.
  • A: Combien de personnes vont venir ?
  • B: Environ vingt personnes.

Practice:

  • Pair work: Students practice dialogues, incorporating polite phrases and future tense
  • Encourage students to ask additional questions:
    • Comment vas-tu organiser le gâteau ? → How will you organize the cake?
    • Pourquoi la fête est-elle samedi ? → Why is the party on Saturday?

 

Step 4: Integrative Practice – 6–7 minutes

Activity:

  • Role-play combining letters and telephone dialogues in pairs or small groups
  • Scenarios:
    • Student A calls Student B to invite them to a festival or party
    • Ask about time, place, number of attendees, and activities
    • Student B responds using polite phrases, accept/refuse invitations, and future tense

Example Activity:

  • A: Allô Fatou ? C’est Paul. Puis-je te parler ?
  • B: Oui, un instant.
  • A: Je t’invite à mon anniversaire samedi. Où veux-tu que la fête ait lieu ?
  • B: Elle peut avoir lieu chez toi. À quelle heure commence-t-elle ?
  • A: Nous allons commencer à 16 heures. Tu viendras ?
  • B: Oui, avec plaisir ! Je t’écrirai demain pour confirmer.

Written Integration:

  • Students write 3–4 sentences describing their phone conversation using:
    • Invitation phrases
    • Future tense verbs
    • Interrogatives

 

Assessment (Formative, during lesson)

  • Oral Assessment: Monitor students’ phone role-plays for:
    • Correct use of polite expressions
    • Accurate interrogative questions
    • Proper use of futur simple and futur proche
  • Written Assessment: Check letters for:
    • Correct sentence formation
