Previous Knowledge

Students already know:
• Vocabulary for medicines, treatments, and health routines • Using Il faut + infinitive for advice.
• Conjugation of regular –er verbs and some irregular verbs in present tense.
• Constructing affirmative and negative sentences.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes
Activity:
• Teacher asks: “Que faites-vous quand vous êtes malade ?”
• Pupils respond orally using vocabulary they already know (Je prends du sirop, Je dors, Je vais chez le médecin…).
• Teacher introduces new sickness vocabulary: malade, grippe, fièvre, toux, diarrhée, douleur.
Learners’ Role: Recall prior vocabulary and participate orally.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Vocabulary Introduction (7 minutes)

Key Words & Expressions:

malade → sick

grippe → flu

fièvre → fever

toux → cough

diarrhée → diarrhea

douleur → pain

Teacher Practice:

Uses flashcards/pictures (sick child, coughing patient, thermometer, hospital).

Pronounces words slowly → pupils repeat chorally and individually.

Writes model sentences on the board:

Je suis malade.

J’ai de la fièvre.

Elle a une grippe.

Il souffre d’une douleur à la tête.

Il a une toux sévère.

Le bébé a la diarrhée.

Learners’ Task:

Pupils form their own sentences with each word.

Teacher asks comprehension questions:

“Qui a une fièvre dans la classe ?” (pupils respond imaginatively).

“Qu’est-ce qu’on fait si on a la grippe ?”

 

  1. Grammar – Conditional Sentences (7 minutes)

Structure: Si + présent + futur proche / action

Teacher Explanation:

Used to describe conditions and consequences.

Examples:

Si je suis malade, je vais à l’hôpital.

Si tu as de la fièvre, tu dois prendre du sirop.

Si nous avons la grippe, nous restons à la maison.

Si vous avez une toux, vous buvez beaucoup d’eau.

Practice:

Teacher writes 3–4 model sentences.

Pupils work in pairs to substitute different sicknesses and actions:

Si j’ai une grippe… (je reste au lit).

Si elle a une douleur… (elle prend un comprimé).

Oral Drill:
Teacher says condition → pupils complete with consequence.

Si j’ai de la diarrhée… (je vais chez le médecin).

 

  1. Conjugation – se rendre & mourir (6–7 minutes)

Conjugations:

Se rendre (to go, to report oneself):

je me rends, tu te rends, il/elle se rend, nous nous rendons, vous vous rendez, ils/elles se rendent

Mourir (to die):

je meurs, tu meurs, il/elle meurt, nous mourons, vous mourez, ils/elles meurent

Teacher Drill:

Teacher calls subject → pupils respond with correct form.

Je… (se rendre) → Je me rends à l’hôpital.

Ils… (mourir) → Ils meurent de la maladie.

Sentence Examples:

Le patient meurt si la maladie est grave.

Nous nous rendons à l’hôpital quand nous sommes malades.

Je me rends chez le médecin demain.

Learners’ Practice:

Pupils write 2 sentences with se rendre and 2 with mourir.

Teacher invites volunteers to read aloud.

 

  1. Role Play – Doctor & Patient (5–6 minutes)

Setup: Pupils in pairs simulate a visit to the doctor.

Rules:

Use at least 2 vocabulary words (grippe, fièvre, toux, etc.).

Use Si + présent sentence.

Include one conjugated verb (se rendre or mourir).

Model Example:

Patient: Bonjour docteur. J’ai de la grippe et une toux.

Doctor: Si vous avez la grippe, il faut rester au lit.

Patient: Si j’ai de la fièvre, je prends du sirop.

Doctor: Très bien. Il faut aussi boire de l’eau et vous reposer.

Learners’ Task:

Pairs create dialogues (3–4 exchanges).

2–3 pairs present to class.

 

  1. Writing Practice (5–6 minutes)

Task: Pupils write 4–5 sentences about what to do when experiencing sickness.

Requirements:

Use at least 2 new vocabulary words.

Include 1 Si + présent sentence.

Use at least 1 verb (se rendre or mourir).

Sample Answer:
Si je suis malade, je me rends à l’hôpital.
J’ai de la fièvre et une toux.
Il faut prendre du sirop et dormir beaucoup.
Si la douleur continue, je retourne chez le médecin.

Conditional sentence substitution drill with different illnesses.

Conjugation race: pupils compete to conjugate se rendre and mourir correctly.

Homework Assignment

Write a short paragraph (5–6 lines) describing what you do if you or someone is sick.

Include at least 2 vocabulary words (grippe, fièvre, toux, diarrhée, douleur).

Use at least 1 Si + présent sentence.

Use 1 conjugated verb (se rendre or mourir).

Sample Starter:
Si mon frère est malade, je me rends à la pharmacie. Il a de la fièvre et de la toux. Il faut respecter la dose du sirop.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Exit Task)

Time: 5–10 minutes
• Teacher summarizes sickness vocabulary, conditional sentence structure, and conjugation.
• Pupils share one oral sentence about a sickness scenario.
• Exit Task: Each pupil writes: Si je suis malade, je ______.

 

✅ Homework Assignment:
• Paragraph (5–6 lines) on sickness scenarios.
• Include at least 2 new vocabulary words and 1 Si + présent sentence.
• Use at least 1 conjugated verb (se rendre, mourir).
