Subject: General Science
Grade Level: Grade 9
Date: ___________________________
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 17, Period 3
Topic: Drugs, Substance Abuse & First Aid
Sub-topic: Effects, Corrective Measures, and Basic Life-saving Skills
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain the effects of drugs and substance abuse on the body.
- Identify corrective measures to prevent or address substance abuse.
- Demonstrate basic first aid techniques for wounds, bleeding, bites, cuts, burns, and artificial respiration.
Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Human body systems and basic health concepts.
• Personal hygiene, puberty, and reproductive health.
Instructional Materials
• Textbook: General Science textbooks for Grade 9
• Teaching aids: Charts showing drug effects, first aid diagrams, videos on first aid procedures
• First aid kits for demonstration
• Students' notebooks and writing materials
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• What substances do you know that can harm the body?
• Have you ever seen someone receive first aid? What was done?
The teacher will record their responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide a short brainstorming session and correct misconceptions.
Learner’s Role:
• Share knowledge and experiences related to drugs, substance abuse, and first aid.
• Respond verbally and participate in the discussion.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body – Expanded Version)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Highly Expanded & Detailed):
- Effects of Drugs and Substance Abuse:
- Explain the common drugs and substances affecting adolescents and adults in Liberia: alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants (glue, petrol), prescription misuse, and other locally available substances.
- Describe short-term effects: impaired judgment, dizziness, nausea, memory loss, hyperactivity, and aggression.
- Describe long-term effects: organ damage (liver, lungs, heart), addiction, social problems, school dropouts, mental health disorders (depression, anxiety), and risk of accidents.
- Highlight effects on reproductive health and growth in adolescents.
- Preventive and Corrective Measures:
- Discuss ways to prevent substance abuse: education, peer support, family guidance, community programs, and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Describe corrective measures: counseling, rehabilitation programs, medical interventions, and community support groups.
- Emphasize the role of schools, parents, and communities in monitoring and guiding youth behavior.
- First Aid Procedures:
- Wounds and Cuts: Clean with water, apply antiseptic, cover with sterile dressing.
- Bleeding: Apply pressure with a clean cloth, elevate the injured part, use tourniquet only in extreme cases.
- Bites (animal or insect): Clean immediately, apply antiseptic, monitor for infection, seek medical attention for venomous bites.
- Burns: Cool with running water, apply clean dressing, avoid ointments for severe burns, seek medical help.
- Artificial Respiration (Rescue Breathing): Demonstrate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation steps, checking airway, chest movement, and safety precautions.
- Relate first aid to real-life emergencies in homes, schools, farms, and public places.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Interactive):
- Observe teacher demonstrations and instructional videos on first aid and substance abuse effects.
- Participate in hands-on practice in small groups:
- Applying dressings, managing bleeding, and simulating artificial respiration using mannequins or volunteer partners.
- Role-playing scenarios demonstrating the consequences of drug misuse and the importance of prevention.
- Take detailed notes on the effects of substance abuse, corrective measures, and step-by-step first aid procedures.
- Optional: Create a list of locally available substances and discuss their risks in peer groups.
Assessment Checks (Expanded):
- Ask students to list at least two short-term and two long-term effects of drug abuse.
- Request learners to demonstrate or explain one first aid procedure, e.g., how to treat a bleeding wound or perform artificial respiration.
- Observe accuracy, safety, and teamwork during hands-on first aid practice.
- Formative check: Ask students to identify situations where first aid would be required and discuss appropriate responses.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
- Emphasize Liberian-specific examples of substance abuse challenges, such as local alcoholic brews, glue sniffing, and peer influence in schools.
- Highlight safety and precautions during first aid: wearing gloves, avoiding contamination, and seeking professional help when necessary.
- Stress responsible behavior and the importance of life-saving skills, both for personal safety and community well-being.
- Encourage learners to share learned skills with family and peers, promoting a culture of safety and awareness in their communities.
Optional Practical/Extension Activities:
- Organize a peer awareness campaign on substance abuse and first aid in school or community.
- Develop posters illustrating drug effects and first aid steps for classrooms.
- Conduct mock emergency drills simulating cuts, burns, or fainting, where students apply first aid techniques under supervision.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• The teacher will ask the students to recall:
- Effects of drugs and substance abuse
- Corrective measures to prevent abuse
- Basic first aid procedures for common injuries
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:
- Name two harmful effects of substance abuse.
- State two corrective measures against drug abuse.
- Describe briefly the first aid steps for a minor burn or cut.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding.
• Provide oral feedback before class ends.
Assignment (Expanded):
• Research a local case of substance abuse and write a short report on its effects and solutions.
• Practice one first aid technique at home under supervision and report experience.
Follow-up Activity:
• Prepare to discuss emergency preparedness and health promotion in the next lesson.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provide simplified instructions, visual aids, and guided demonstrations.
• Advanced Learners: Explore detailed case studies on substance abuse and emergency first aid.
• Students with Disabilities: Offer peer support, hands-on guidance, and adapted materials for practice.
