Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 15, Period 3
Topic: Infertility, Sterility & Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Sub-topic: Causes, Prevention, and Care

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain infertility and sterility, including biological and cultural causes.
  2. Identify common STIs and describe their causes, symptoms, treatments, and prevention.
  3. Discuss HIV/AIDS: definition, causes, modes of transmission, signs/symptoms, treatment, prevention, and care of PLWHA.
  4. Identify vulnerable groups for STIs and HIV/AIDS.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Human reproduction, puberty, and adolescent reproductive health.
• Basic hygiene and disease prevention concepts.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: General Science textbooks for Grade 9
• Teaching aids: Charts showing STIs and HIV/AIDS, diagrams of reproductive organs, videos on prevention and care
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• What are some problems couples may face when trying to have children?
• Can you name some diseases that affect reproductive health?
The teacher will record their responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide a short brainstorming session and correct misconceptions.
Learner’s Role:
• Share their knowledge about infertility, STIs, and HIV/AIDS.
• Respond verbally and participate in discussion.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body – Expanded Version)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Highly Expanded & Detailed):

  • Infertility and Sterility:
    • Define infertility as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected sexual activity and sterility as the permanent inability to reproduce.
    • Biological causes: Hormonal imbalances, ovulation problems, low sperm count, blocked fallopian tubes, infections.
    • Cultural/social causes: Early or late marriage, harmful traditional practices (e.g., prolonged postpartum abstinence, herbal remedies), gender biases limiting access to medical care.
    • Discuss the impact on family life, psychological well-being, and social relationships.
  • Common Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
    • Gonorrhea: Caused by bacteria; symptoms include painful urination, discharge; treatable with antibiotics; preventable by condom use and abstinence.
    • Syphilis: Bacterial infection; causes sores, rashes; treated with antibiotics; preventable by safe sexual practices.
    • Chancroid: Bacterial infection; painful genital ulcers; treatable with antibiotics; prevention via safe sex.
    • Chlamydia: Bacterial infection; often asymptomatic; causes infertility if untreated; preventable with condoms.
    • Trichomoniasis: Protozoan infection; causes itching, discharge; treatable with medication; preventable by sexual hygiene.
    • Candidiasis: Fungal infection; causes itching, discharge; treated with antifungal medications; preventable by hygiene and avoiding prolonged moisture exposure.
    • Emphasize early detection, treatment compliance, and partner notification.
  • HIV/AIDS:
    • Definition: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) attacks the immune system, leading to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) if untreated.
    • Causes: Sexual transmission, blood transfusions, sharing needles, mother-to-child transmission.
    • Signs/Symptoms: Persistent fever, weight loss, frequent infections, swollen lymph nodes.
    • Treatment: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) to suppress viral load.
    • Prevention: Abstinence, condom use, safe needle practices, HIV testing.
    • Care and Support of PLWHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS): Emotional support, nutrition, adherence to ART, avoiding stigma.
  • Vulnerable Groups:
    • Adolescents, pregnant women, commercial sex workers, intravenous drug users, persons with multiple sexual partners.
    • Discuss why these groups are at higher risk and strategies to protect them.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Interactive):

  • Observe charts, diagrams, and videos illustrating infertility, STIs, and HIV/AIDS transmission.
  • Take detailed notes on biological and cultural causes of infertility, STI symptoms, treatment, and prevention.
  • Participate in group discussions or case studies:
    • Identify preventive measures for STIs and HIV/AIDS.
    • Discuss ways to support affected individuals in school or community contexts.
    • Role-play health educators teaching peers about STI/HIV awareness and prevention.
  • Optional activity: Students create awareness posters on STI/HIV prevention and care of PLWHA.

Assessment Checks (Expanded):

  • Ask students to list two biological causes of infertility.
  • Request examples of prevention methods for at least three STIs.
  • Observe participation in group discussions and role-play activities for understanding and engagement.
  • Quick formative check: Match STI/HIV symptoms with appropriate treatment or preventive action.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Emphasize local Liberian examples, e.g., prevalence of STIs in urban vs rural areas, local cultural practices influencing reproductive health.
  • Highlight the importance of regular testing, responsible sexual behavior, and supportive communities to reduce STIs and HIV/AIDS.
  • Provide learners with handouts summarizing STI/HIV symptoms, treatments, and prevention strategies for home reference.
  • Encourage learners to discuss sensitive topics respectfully and to seek guidance from trusted adults or healthcare professionals.

Optional Practical/Extension Activities:

  • Conduct a peer education session on STI/HIV prevention strategies.
  • Organize a community awareness survey: identify misconceptions about STIs and HIV/AIDS and suggest corrective measures.
  • Create a classroom chart showing differences between biological and cultural causes of infertility.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• The teacher will ask the students to recall:

  • Causes of infertility and sterility
  • Common STIs and their prevention
  • Key facts about HIV/AIDS and care for PLWHA

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:

  1. Define infertility and sterility.
  2. Name three common STIs and one prevention method for each.
  3. State two ways HIV/AIDS can be prevented and two ways to support PLWHA.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding.
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends.

Assignment (Expanded):
• Research one STI and prepare a short report on its causes, symptoms, and prevention.
• List three ways communities can support individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
Follow-up Activity:
• Prepare to discuss reproductive health education and safe sexual practices in the next lesson.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provide visual aids, simplified explanations, and peer guidance.
• Advanced Learners: Explore detailed case studies on HIV/AIDS care and STI prevention programs.
• Students with Disabilities: Use tactile models, charts, and peer assistance to ensure participation.
