Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic concepts of physical fitness
• Examples of exercises and activities that improve health
Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 9
• Teaching aids: Stopwatches, ropes, cones, open space or track, charts for heart rate
• Students' notebooks and writing materials
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• What activities make your heart beat faster or make you breathe harder?
• How do you know you are exercising at the right intensity?
The teacher will record their responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide brainstorming, clarify misconceptions, and connect responses to cardiovascular fitness.
Learner’s Role:
• Share personal experiences with exercises that increase heart rate.
• Participate verbally and actively in discussion.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded):
Explanation of Cardiovascular Endurance: The teacher begins by defining cardiovascular endurance as the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients efficiently to working muscles during sustained physical activity. Emphasis is placed on how strong cardiovascular endurance supports overall health, reduces fatigue, and improves performance in both school activities and sports. Students are informed that regular cardiovascular activity enhances heart function, lung capacity, circulation, and metabolic efficiency.
Introduction of Cardiovascular Activities: The teacher introduces practical examples of cardiovascular exercises including running, jogging, swimming, and rope skipping. Each activity is discussed in terms of technique, duration, and intensity, emphasizing gradual progression to avoid overexertion. Students are shown how these exercises stimulate heart rate and breathing, which strengthens the cardiovascular system.
Demonstration of Heart Rate Measurement: The teacher demonstrates how to measure pulse or heart rate at the wrist or neck before, during, and after exercise. Students learn to calculate resting, working, and recovery heart rates, understanding how these indicators reflect cardiovascular fitness. Graphs or simple charts may be used to illustrate changes in heart rate with activity intensity.
Safe Practices During Cardiovascular Exercises: The teacher highlights key safety principles: conducting proper warm-ups, staying hydrated, pacing activities according to fitness level, wearing appropriate footwear, and exercising in safe environments. Examples of common injuries and how to prevent them are discussed, reinforcing the importance of safety.
Linking to Local Context: The teacher connects cardiovascular activities to Liberian community and school contexts, such as participation in community runs, soccer matches, traditional dances, and endurance-based traditional games. These examples help learners understand how cardiovascular endurance is both culturally relevant and practically important.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Assessment Checks:
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher asks students to recall cardiovascular activities, their benefits, and safe practices.
• Students share personal reflections on which activity they prefer and why.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers to:
• Name two cardiovascular endurance activities.
• Explain one benefit of cardiovascular exercise.
• Describe a safety measure to follow during exercise.
• Teacher collects and quickly reviews for understanding.
• Provide oral feedback before class ends.
Assignment (Expanded):
Follow-up Activity:
• Perform a 10–15 minute cardiovascular activity at home or school. Record heart rate before and after, then write a short reflection on the effects of the activity.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Perform activities at a slower pace or shorter duration with supervision.
• Advanced Learners: Increase intensity or try more challenging activities like continuous jogging or interval training.
• Students with Disabilities: Modify activities for accessibility or provide alternative exercises for cardiovascular benefit.
