Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 20, Period 4
Topic: Injuries
Sub-topic: Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, and mild sprains.
  2. Apply preventive methods to avoid minor injuries during activities.
  3. Relate preventive techniques to local school and community sports.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Common minor injuries and basic first aid
• Importance of safety in physical activities

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical Education textbooks for Grade 9
• Teaching aids:
• Students' notebooks and writing materials
• Protective gear (shin guards, helmets, wrist guards)
• Demonstration space for exercises

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• Have you ever experienced a minor injury during sports or exercises?
• What did you do to prevent it or recover from it?
The teacher will record their responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion to connect prior experiences with preventive methods.
Learner’s Role:
• Share personal experiences of minor injuries.
• Participate actively in the discussion.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
The teacher begins by reviewing common minor injuries, such as cuts from sharp objects, bruises from falls or collisions, and mild sprains from twisting joints during physical activity. They explain how these injuries often occur due to insufficient warm-up, improper techniques, lack of protective equipment, dehydration, or inappropriate footwear.

The teacher then demonstrates preventive methods in detail:

  • Proper warm-up exercises: stretching major muscle groups, light jogging, and joint mobilization to prepare muscles and ligaments for activity.
  • Use of protective gear: applying knee pads, wrist guards, shin guards, or helmets during sports or high-risk activities.
  • Correct techniques: demonstrating proper ways to jump, land, lift, or move to minimize risk of strains or sprains.
  • Hydration: importance of drinking water before, during, and after activity to prevent cramps and fatigue.
  • Appropriate footwear: shoes that provide support, traction, and cushioning for different surfaces.

The teacher emphasizes practical application by relating these preventive methods to school sports, community games, and traditional Liberian activities such as football, handball, or local dances.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Perform a series of warm-up exercises guided by the teacher, ensuring proper technique and range of motion.
  • Practice using protective gear in simulated scenarios, understanding correct placement and function.
  • Participate in demonstrations of safe movement, such as proper landing from jumps, controlled twisting, or lifting techniques to avoid sprains or strains.
  • Discuss and share examples from local activities where these preventive measures can reduce minor injuries.

Assessment Checks:

  • Observe learners performing warm-ups and safety exercises correctly.
  • Conduct Q&A sessions asking students to name types of minor injuries and explain at least one preventive method for each.
  • Monitor participation to ensure students understand the practical importance of prevention.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Stress the critical role of preparation and safety measures in preventing minor injuries.
  • Use culturally relevant examples from Liberian sports, dances, and school activities to make lessons relatable.
  • Encourage learners to apply these strategies in daily activities, fostering a habit of safety awareness.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• The teacher will ask the students to recall minor injuries and preventive methods.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers to:

  1. Name three minor injuries.
  2. List two preventive methods for each injury.
Teacher collects and provides oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Follow-up Activity:
• Students observe local sports activities and identify preventive measures being used or ignored.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provide step-by-step guidance during warm-up and protective gear practice.
• Advanced Learners: Design a short safety guide for peers highlighting minor injury prevention.
• Students with Disabilities: Adapt exercises to ensure safe participation with modifications if needed.
