Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 33, Period 6
Topic: Skills and Techniques: Forearm Pass and Overhead Pass
Sub-topic:

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the correct technique for forearm (bump) passes.
  2. Demonstrate the correct technique for overhead (set) passes.
  3. Apply proper footwork and positioning during passing.
  4. Participate in hand-eye coordination and communication drills during passing exercises.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic rules of volleyball including court setup, net play, and scoring.
• Serving techniques and general team positioning.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical Education textbooks for Grade 9
• Teaching aids:
• Students' notebooks and writing materials
• Volleyball or suitable ball for demonstrations
• Court or marked playing area

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• Have you used a forearm or overhead pass before in volleyball?
• Why do you think correct positioning and communication are important during passes?
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions, and set lesson objectives.
Learner’s Role:
• Share previous experiences and ideas about passing techniques.
• Participate actively in warm-up discussion.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role:
• Explain and demonstrate forearm pass (bump) technique:
 - Proper stance: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, weight balanced on toes.
 - Hand positioning: thumbs together, fists closed or palms aligned, arms extended and firm.
 - Contact point: ball meets the forearms just above the wrists.
 - Emphasize keeping elbows straight and using legs to direct force, not just arms.
• Explain and demonstrate overhead pass (set) technique:
 - Hand placement: fingers spread, thumbs and index form a triangle, ball contacts fingertips.
 - Body alignment: knees slightly bent, feet shoulder-width apart, elbows above shoulders.
 - Follow-through: push ball upward using legs and arms in coordination.
• Emphasize footwork and positioning: moving quickly into passing position, maintaining balance, and adjusting body orientation to the incoming ball.
• Conduct hand-eye coordination and communication drills:
 - Partner passing drills: alternating forearm and overhead passes.
 - Group drills: calling for the ball, keeping spacing, timing passes, and ensuring readiness for the next touch.
 - Reinforce verbal cues (“Mine!”, “Set!”, “Over!”) and visual signals for coordination.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)
• Practice forearm passes with partners in small groups, focusing on stance, arm position, and ball control.
• Practice overhead passes in controlled drills, concentrating on proper hand placement and follow-through.
• Participate in coordination and communication drills, emphasizing accuracy, timing, and teamwork.
• Reflect on performance, self-correct mistakes, and provide peer feedback under teacher supervision.

Assessment Checks:
• Observe and evaluate students’ technique, posture, and accuracy during forearm and overhead passes.
• Check ability to maintain proper footwork, spacing, and balance during drills.
• Monitor communication skills, teamwork, and responsiveness during coordination exercises.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• Emphasize consistent contact and controlled ball direction for effective passing.
• Reinforce verbal and visual communication cues to improve coordination in game situations.
• Encourage students to self-assess, identify challenges, and immediately correct mistakes for skill improvement.
• Highlight the importance of these techniques in real match scenarios, including singles, doubles, and team rotations.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Recap forearm and overhead pass techniques.
• Review importance of footwork, positioning, and communication.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:
 1. Describe the correct forearm pass technique.
 2. Describe the correct overhead pass technique.
 3. Explain why footwork and communication are important during passing.
• Teacher will collect and review for understanding.
• Provide oral feedback before class ends.
Assignment (Expanded): Follow-up Activity:
• Practice forearm and overhead passes at home or during PE period.
• Record or reflect on improvements in accuracy, positioning, and communication.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provide step-by-step demonstration and additional guided practice.
• Advanced Learners: Practice combination drills with moving targets or increased speed.
• Students with Disabilities: Adapt passing drills for ability while maintaining engagement.
