Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “What do you understand by gender-based violence?”
• “Can you give examples of domestic violence and how it affects families?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, clarify misconceptions, and introduce the topic’s relevance to society.
Learner’s Role:
• Share prior knowledge and experiences regarding GBV and domestic violence.
• Respond verbally and participate actively in the discussion.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role:
• Define Gender-Based Violence (GBV): any harmful act directed at an individual based on their gender. Include physical, sexual, psychological, and economic forms:
– Physical violence: hitting, slapping, burning, or other forms of bodily harm.
– Sexual violence: rape, sexual assault, harassment, forced prostitution.
– Psychological/emotional violence: threats, intimidation, humiliation, coercion.
– Economic violence: denial of resources, financial control, preventing participation in income-generating activities.
• Explain causes of GBV:
– Cultural norms and traditional practices that favor one gender.
– Poverty and economic dependence.
– Social inequality and lack of legal protection.
– Alcohol or substance abuse and psychological disorders.
– Low awareness of human rights and gender equality.
• Discuss consequences of GBV:
– Emotional and psychological trauma for survivors.
– Family breakdown and loss of parental care for children.
– Social stigma and marginalization.
– Economic loss due to inability to work or medical costs.
– Legal implications for perpetrators and communities.
• Introduce domestic violence:
– Types: physical, emotional/psychological, sexual, economic.
– Effects on children: trauma, poor academic performance, behavioral problems.
– Effects on spouses: depression, loss of self-esteem, health complications.
– Effects on community cohesion: weakened social bonds, perpetuation of violence.
• Prevention and intervention strategies:
– Legal frameworks and law enforcement.
– Community education and advocacy.
– Support services: shelters, counseling, hotlines.
– Promoting gender equality and empowerment programs.
