Multiplication is Repeated Addition What is it? Multiplication is a shortcut for adding the same number many times. When we have equal groups of objects, we can multiply to find the total quickly.

Key Vocabulary: Groups of: This is the most important phrase. "3 groups of 4" means we have 4 items, and we have 3 sets of them.

Multiply / Times: These are the action words for multiplication. ×: This is the multiplication symbol. We read it as "times". How it Works (The "Why"): Imagine you are at a party and you see 4 plates. Worked example

Problem: Busi buys 3 bags of marbles. Each bag has 5 marbles inside. How many marbles does Busi have altogether?

Step-by-step Solution:

Identify the groups: The bags are the groups. There are 3 groups.

Identify the number in each group: There are 5 marbles in each group.

Write the repeated addition sum: We are adding 5, three times.

`5 + 5 + 5`

Calculate the sum:

5 + 5 = 10

10 + 5 = 15

So, `5 + 5 + 5 = 15`.

Write the multiplication number sentence: This is "3 groups of 5".

`3 × 5 = 15`

Answer in a full sentence: Busi has 15 marbles altogether.

B. Division is Repeated Subtraction

What is it?

Division helps us do two things: sharing things equally or making equal groups. We will focus on division as making equal groups, which connects directly to repeated subtraction. It's about finding out how many times you can take away a certain number from a total.

Divide / Share: These are the action words for division.

Groups / Sets: We are finding out how many equal groups we can make.

÷: This is the division symbol. We read it as "divided by".
