Lesson summary

In Grade 2 Life Skills, we're learning about staying healthy and happy! This week, we're focusing on health and nutrition. What we eat and how we take care of our bodies plays a big role in how we feel, how well we learn in school, and how much energy we have to play with our friends and family. In South Africa, many families eat different types of food, and it’s important to understand what food helps us grow strong and healthy. We'll also learn about good hygiene habits to keep germs away. Understanding nutrition and hygiene helps us make good choices every day!

Lesson notes

2.1 Food Groups: Building Blocks for a Healthy Body Our bodies need different types of food to work properly. We can group foods into different categories based on what they do for our bodies.

These groups are: Fruits and Vegetables: These give us vitamins and minerals that help us grow, fight off sickness, and have energy. Examples include apples, bananas, oranges, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and butternut squash. Think of fruits and vegetables as the body’s superheroes! They're like the "vitamins" that many South African grannies talk about for their healing properties.

Grains: These give us energy to run, jump, and play! They also give us fiber, which helps our bodies digest food. Examples include maize (mealie pap), rice, bread, oats, and samp. In South Africa, maize is a staple food, so it’s very important for energy.

Protein: These help us build strong muscles and bones. Examples include chicken, fish, beef, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts. Many South African families enjoy braais, which often include protein like chicken or beef.

Dairy: These give us calcium, which is very important for strong bones and teeth. Examples include milk, cheese, and yogurt. Why is it important to eat from all the food groups? Eating only one type of food isn't healthy. For example, eating only pap won’t give you the vitamins and minerals you need to grow strong. Eating only sweets won't give you enough energy to play. Eating different foods from each group helps our bodies get everything they need to be healthy and strong.
