This lesson introduces Grade 2 learners to the exciting world of number patterns. A number pattern is a sequence of numbers that follow a specific rule. Understanding patterns is a foundational skill in mathematics, helping learners develop logical reasoning, predictive skills, and problem-solving abilities. In the South African context, patterns are all around us – from the beautiful geometric designs in Ndebele art and the repeating rhythms in traditional music to the way we count out money for the spaza shop.
What is a Number Pattern? A number pattern is a list of numbers that are connected by a rule. The rule tells us how to get from one number to the next. It’s like a secret code! What is a Rule? The rule is the instruction we follow to make the pattern. For Grade 2, our rules will mostly be about adding or subtracting the same number over and over. A. Increasing Patterns (Counting Forwards) These are patterns where the numbers get bigger. This happens when our rule is to add.
Counting in 2s: We add 2 each time.
Example: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, ...
How it works: We start at 10. 10 + 2 = 12 12 + 2 = 14 14 + 2 = 16 ...and so on.
Think about it: This is like counting pairs of shoes, or the wheels on bicycles.
Counting in 5s: We add 5 each time.
Example: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, ...
How it works: We start at 25. 25 + 5 = 30 30 + 5 = 35 35 + 5 = 40 ...and so on.
Think about it: This is like counting R5 coins to see how much money you have saved.
Counting in 10s: We add 10 each time.
Example: 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, ...
How it works: We start at 40. 40 + 10 = 50 50 + 10 = 60 60 + 10 = 70 ...and so on.
Think about it: This is like counting your fingers and toes, or counting R10 notes. B. Decreasing Patterns (Counting Backwards) These are patterns where the numbers get smaller. This happens when our rule is to subtract.
Counting back in 1s: We subtract 1 each time.
Example: 54, 53, 52, 51, 50, ...
How it works: We start at 54. 54 - 1 = 53 53 - 1 = 52 52 - 1 = 51 ...and so on.
Think about it: This is like a countdown for a race!
Counting back in 10s: We subtract 10 each time.
Example: 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, ...
How it works: We start at 90. 90 - 10 = 80 80 - 10 = 70 70 - 10 = 60 ...and so on.
Think about it: This is like spending R10 from your savings each day.
C. Finding the Rule To find the rule, we look at two numbers next to each other and ask: "What did I do to get from the first number to the second number? Did I add or subtract? And by how much?"
