Lesson summary

This week, we are taking a special journey to look back at all the wonderful things we have learned in Life Skills this term. Revision is like being a detective! We will look for clues in our memory to remember important ideas about ourselves, our health, our safety, and the world around us. This is important because everything we learn in Life Skills helps us to live happy, healthy, and safe lives every day in South Africa. When we know how to identify our feelings, we can talk about them. When we know what foods are healthy, we can help our bodies grow strong.

Lesson notes

A. Our Feelings Feelings are what we feel inside our hearts and bodies. It is okay to have all sorts of feelings. The important thing is to understand them and talk about them.

Happy: This is the feeling you get when something good happens. Your body might feel light, and you might want to smile or laugh.

Example: You feel happy when your Gogo comes to visit, or when you score a goal playing soccer at break time.

Sad: This is the feeling you get when something upsetting happens. You might feel heavy, and you might want to cry.

Example: You might feel sad if you fall and scrape your knee, or if your friend doesn't want to play with you.

Angry: This is a strong, hot feeling you get when something feels unfair or someone bothers you. You might frown and want to shout. It is important to learn how to handle anger without hurting others.

Example: You might feel angry if someone grabs your crayon without asking.

Why it's important: Knowing our feelings helps us tell adults how we are. If you can say, "I feel sad because...", a teacher or parent can help you feel better. B. Healthy Living Living a healthy life means taking care of our amazing bodies.

We do this in three main ways: eating well, keeping clean, and moving our bodies.

Eating Healthy Food: Food is fuel for our bodies. Healthy food gives us energy to play and learn. Healthy Foods (Eat lots of these!): Fruits (like apples and bananas from local farms), vegetables (like spinach/morogo and carrots), pap, brown bread, milk/maas, chicken, and fish. Sometimes Foods (Eat only a little of these!): Sweets, chips, fizzy drinks, and cake. They are nice for a party but not for every day because they have too much sugar.

Keeping Clean (Hygiene): Keeping clean stops germs from making us sick.

Handwashing: We must wash our hands with soap and water before we eat, after we use the toilet, and after playing outside. This washes away tiny, invisible germs.

Brushing Teeth: We brush our teeth in the morning and at night to keep them strong and prevent holes (cavities).

Exercise: Moving our bodies makes our hearts and bones strong.

Example: Running outside with friends, playing hopscotch, skipping rope, or dancing to your favourite South African music like Amapiano.

C. Staying Safe Being safe means protecting ourselves from getting hurt.

Road Safety: Roads can be dangerous. We must always be careful.

The Rule: Before you cross the street, you must STOP at the kerb, LOOK right, LOOK left, and LOOK right again. If the road is clear, you can walk straight across. Never run!

Zebra Crossings: These are special painted lines where cars must stop for people to cross. Always use them if you can.

Safety at Home: Never play with matches, lighters, or the stove. This can cause a very dangerous fire. Do not open the door for strangers. Only open the door if your parents or a trusted adult says it is okay. Know emergency numbers. The number for the South African Police Service (SAPS) is

1. D. Seasons in South Africa Our country has four different seasons. The weather and the world around us change with each season.

Summer (December - February): It is very hot. We often have thunderstorms in the afternoon, especially in places like Gauteng. We wear cool clothes like shorts and t-shirts and love to go swimming.

Autumn (March - May): The weather starts to get cooler. The leaves on some trees change colour to red, yellow, and orange before they fall.

Winter (June - August): It gets cold! In some high places like the Drakensberg mountains, it might even snow. We wear warm jackets, beanies, and scarves.

Spring (September - November): The weather gets warmer again. New leaves grow on trees, and beautiful flowers start to bloom, like the purple Jacaranda trees in Pretoria or the colourful daisies in Namaqualand. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Look at the list of foods below. Draw two circles. Label one "Healthy Foods" and the other "Sometimes Foods". Write each food item in the correct circle.

Foods: Apple, Lollipop, Carrot, Brown Bread Sandwich, Fizzy Drink, Milk Solution 1: Healthy Foods Circle: Apple, Carrot, Brown Bread Sandwich, Milk Sometimes Foods Circle: Lollipop, Fizzy Drink

Commentary: We place apple, carrot, sandwich, and milk in the 'Healthy' circle because they give our bodies good energy, vitamins, and strength. The lollipop and fizzy drink go in the 'Sometimes' circle because they are mostly sugar and are not good for our bodies if we have them too often.

Question 2: Match the feeling to the situation. Draw a line connecting them. | Feeling | Situation | | :--- | :--- | | Happy | Your dog ran away. | | Sad | You are having a birthday party. | | Angry | Someone broke your favourite toy. | Solution 2: Happy -> You are having a birthday party. Sad -> Your dog ran away. Angry -> Someone broke your favourite toy.

Commentary: We match 'Happy' with a birthday party because parties are fun and exciting.
