Lesson summary

This week, we will become 'data detectives'! We will explore the exciting world of Data Handling and also revise important skills we have learned this term. Data Handling is a way of collecting information, organising it, and showing it in a way that is easy to understand. This is a very important skill in South Africa. Imagine a spaza shop owner wanting to know which flavour of chips is the most popular so they can order more. They are using data handling! Or think about voting – we count the votes (data) to see who has won. By learning about data, we learn how to make sense of the world around us, make clever choices, and share information clearly with others.

Lesson notes

What is Data? Data is just a collection of information. It can be numbers, words, or pictures. For example, the number of learners in our class is data. The colours of the cars in the school car park is data. Our favourite fruits are data.

Step 1: Collecting and Organising Data with Tally Marks Before we can understand data, we need to collect it and organise it. A very clever and quick way to do this is by using tally marks. A tally mark is a single line ( | ) that represents one item. When we get to the fifth item, we draw a line across the first four (||||). This makes a group of 5, which is very easy to count quickly!
