Lesson summary

This week, we're going to revise and consolidate what we learned about "My Body and Keeping Healthy" from Week 2 of our Grade 2 Life Skills curriculum. Understanding our bodies and how to take care of them is super important because it helps us stay strong, happy, and ready to learn and play! In South Africa, access to healthcare and resources can sometimes be a challenge, so learning good habits early is vital for our well-being and helps us build healthy communities. We need to understand our rights to good health and how to make good choices to protect ourselves. We'll revisit topics like personal hygiene, healthy eating, and the importance of exercise.

Lesson notes

My Body Parts and Their Functions: Our body is made up of different parts, and each part has a job to do.

Head: Contains our brain, which helps us think, learn, and remember. It also has our eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, nose for smelling, and mouth for talking and eating.

Arms and Hands: Help us reach, grab, write, and play. Our fingers help us do small tasks like buttoning our shirts.

Legs and Feet: Help us walk, run, jump, and dance. Our feet support our whole body when we stand.

Tummy (Stomach): Helps us digest our food, turning it into energy for our bodies.

Heart: Pumps blood all around our body, giving us energy.

Example: Let's say Thando is playing soccer. His legs help him run, his feet help him kick the ball, his eyes help him see where the ball is going, and his brain helps him decide where to kick it.

Personal Hygiene Habits: Keeping clean is vital for preventing germs from making us sick.

Washing Hands: Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet, before eating, and after playing outside. This removes germs we can't see.

Brushing Teeth: Brush your teeth twice a day – in the morning and before bed – to remove food and keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Bathing/Showering: Bathe or shower regularly (daily or every other day) to remove dirt and sweat.

Wearing Clean Clothes: Changing into clean clothes every day helps to prevent germs from spreading.

Combing/Brushing Hair: Keeps your hair clean and tidy.

Example: Zanele plays in the sandpit at school. After playing, she washes her hands with soap and water. This is important because the sand might have germs that could make her sick if she eats her lunch without washing her hands.

Healthy Food Choices: What we eat affects how our bodies grow and how much energy we have.

Fruits and Vegetables: These provide vitamins and minerals that help our bodies stay strong and fight off illnesses. Think of apples, bananas, oranges, carrots, spinach, and tomatoes.

Grains: Provide energy for our bodies. Think of bread, pap (maize porridge), rice, and mealie bread.

Protein: Helps us build strong muscles. Think of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and lentils.

Dairy: Helps us build strong bones. Think of milk, yogurt, and cheese.

Limit sugary drinks and snacks: Too many sweets, chips, and fizzy drinks are not good for our bodies. They can give us too much energy at once, and they don't have the vitamins and minerals we need.

Example: Sipho's mom packs him a lunchbox with a sandwich (grains), an apple (fruit), and a piece of cheese (dairy). This is a healthy lunch because it gives him energy, vitamins, and helps build strong bones.

Importance of Exercise: Moving our bodies helps us stay strong, healthy, and happy.

Running and Jumping: Strengthens our legs and hearts.

Playing Games: Games like soccer, netball, and skipping are fun ways to get exercise.

Dancing: Helps us move our bodies and express ourselves.

Walking: A simple way to get exercise, especially when walking to school or to the shops with a grown-up.

Example: Aisha loves to skip rope with her friends after school. This is good for her because it strengthens her legs, gets her heart pumping, and is lots of fun! Guided Practice (With Solutions)
