Lesson summary

Introduction This week, we become 'Data Detectives'! Data handling is an exciting part of mathematics where we learn how to collect, sort, and show information so that it is easy to understand. In our daily lives in South Africa, we are surrounded by information. For example, we might want to know which team (like the Springboks or Bafana Bafana) is the most popular in our class, how many red cars pass by our school gate, or what the most popular fruit sold at the local spaza shop is. Data handling gives us the tools to answer these questions by gathering information (data) and presenting it in a clear way, like in a picture graph.

Lesson notes

What is Data? Data is just a fancy word for information. It's a collection of facts, like numbers, colours, or answers to questions. When we ask our friends, "What is your favourite colour?" their answers are data!

Step 1: Collecting Data with Tally Marks Before we can make a graph, we need to collect our information. A very quick and easy way to do this is by using tally marks.

How it works: For every item you count, you draw one straight line down (|). When you get to the fifth item, you draw a line across the first four (||||). This makes a group of 5, which is easy to count quickly.
