This lesson focuses on revising and consolidating key concepts from Week 3 of our Grade 2 Life Skills curriculum. Week 3 typically centers around understanding and practicing healthy habits, specifically focusing on personal hygiene and healthy eating. These are vital skills for all South African children. Good hygiene helps prevent the spread of germs and keeps us healthy, allowing us to attend school, play with friends, and enjoy our lives. Healthy eating provides the energy and nutrients our bodies need to grow strong and learn effectively. By reviewing these concepts, we reinforce good habits that will benefit us throughout our lives.
2.1 Personal Hygiene: Personal hygiene refers to the things we do to keep our bodies clean and healthy.
This includes: Washing our hands: Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to remove germs. We should wash our hands after using the toilet, before eating, after playing outside, and after touching anything dirty. Think about all the surfaces we touch – desks, doorknobs, toys – these can all carry germs!
Example: Imagine you've been playing soccer in the dusty field. Your hands are covered in dirt. If you eat a sandwich without washing your hands, you could be eating those germs too!
Bathing or showering: Bathing or showering regularly helps to remove dirt and sweat from our bodies. This keeps us smelling fresh and prevents skin problems.
Example: After a long day at school, especially after physical education (PE), showering or bathing washes away sweat and keeps us clean.
Brushing our teeth: Brushing our teeth at least twice a day (morning and night) helps to remove food particles and plaque that can cause cavities (holes in our teeth).
Example: After eating a sugary snack like a lollipop, brushing your teeth helps to remove the sugar that can cause tooth decay.
Keeping our nails clean: Trimmed and clean nails prevent germs from hiding underneath them.
Example: If you're helping your mom or dad in the garden, dirt can get stuck under your nails. Washing and trimming them is very important.
Wearing clean clothes: Clean clothes help prevent the spread of germs and keep us feeling fresh.
Example: After PE, changing into clean clothes will prevent sweat from irritating your skin. 2.2 Healthy Eating: Healthy eating means choosing foods that give our bodies the energy and nutrients they need to grow and be healthy. This includes eating a variety of foods from different food groups.
Fruits and Vegetables: These are full of vitamins and minerals that help our bodies work properly.
Example: An orange is a healthy fruit full of vitamin C, which helps our bodies fight off colds. Carrots are a healthy vegetable that helps us see better.
Grains: Grains like bread, rice, and maize meal (pap) provide us with energy. Opt for whole grains when possible.
Example: A slice of brown bread is healthier than a slice of white bread because it contains more fibre.
Protein: Protein helps us build and repair our bodies. Good sources of protein include meat, chicken, fish, beans, and lentils.
Example: Chicken and fish are good sources of protein that help our muscles grow strong. Lentils are a great and affordable protein source often used in soups and stews.
Dairy: Dairy products like milk and yogurt are good sources of calcium, which helps us build strong bones and teeth.
Example: Drinking a glass of milk every day helps make our bones strong.
Limiting Unhealthy Foods: It's okay to eat unhealthy foods like sweets, chips, and sugary drinks sometimes, but we should limit them because they don't provide our bodies with the nutrients we need. They can also lead to health problems like tooth decay and weight gain.
Example: Eating too many sweets can give you a tummy ache and damage your teeth. 2.3 Handwashing Technique: Proper handwashing involves the following steps: Wet your hands with clean, running water. Apply soap and rub your hands together to create a lather. Scrub all surfaces of your hands – backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails – for at least 20 seconds. A good way to time this is to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice. Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean, running water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them. Solution: Wash your hands with soap and water. Bathe or shower regularly. Brush your teeth at least twice a day.

Question 3: You have just finished playing soccer in the field. What should you do before eating your snack? Explain why.
Solution: I should wash my hands with soap and water before eating my snack. This is because my hands are likely covered in dirt and germs from playing in the field. Washing them will remove the germs and prevent me from getting sick.
Commentary: This question applies hygiene knowledge to a real-life scenario. The explanation is crucial for demonstrating understanding.
