Data handling is all about collecting, organizing, and representing information in a way that makes it easy to understand. Think about when you and your friends decide what games to play at break time. You might ask everyone what they want to play, and then see which game got the most votes. That's data handling! In real life, understanding data helps us make better decisions, from choosing our favourite fruits at the market to understanding what subjects the whole class enjoys the most. It’s a skill we use every day, even without realising it. In this week, we revise and reinforce these skills.
Data Collection: Data is just information. We can collect data by asking questions (surveys) or by watching what happens (observation).
Surveys: A survey is when you ask people questions and write down their answers. For example, you could ask your classmates what their favourite colour is.
Observation: Observing means watching something and noting what you see. For example, you could watch which fruits people buy most at the tuck shop.
Organizing Data: Once we have data, we need to organize it to make sense of it.
Tally Marks: Tally marks are a quick way to count things. We use groups of five. Four lines are drawn vertically and then the fifth line goes across, like this: |||| Tables: A table organizes data into rows and columns.
Representing Data: We can show our data in a picture to make it easy to understand.
Pictographs: A pictograph uses pictures to represent data. Each picture stands for a certain number of items. It's very important to have a key to show what each picture means.
Example 1: Collecting and organizing data about favourite fruits.
Problem: Miss Thandi asked her Grade 2 class what their favourite fruit is.
Here are their answers: Apple, Banana, Apple, Orange, Banana, Banana, Apple, Apple, Orange, Strawberry, Banana, Apple, Orange, Apple, Apple. Let's organize this data.
Solution:
Tally Marks:
Apple: ||||| |
Banana: ||||

Table:
| Fruit | Tally Marks | Number |
| ---------- | ----------- | ------ |
| Apple | ||||| | | 6 |
| Banana | |||| | 4 |
| Orange | ||| | 3 |
| Strawberry | | | 1 |
