This week, we will become 'data detectives'! We are learning about Data Handling. Data is just a fancy word for information. Every day, we see and use information to make choices. For example, by looking at the weather, we decide whether to wear a jersey. In our South African communities, we might see data in shops showing which fruits are the most popular, or a school might count how many learners use taxi, bus, or walk to school. Learning to handle data helps us to understand the world around us better by collecting, sorting, and showing information in a way that is easy to understand.
What is Data Handling? Data handling is a process with a few simple steps: Ask a Question: We start with a question we want to answer (e.g., "What is the favourite season of learners in our class?").
Collect Data: We gather the answers (the information). A great way to do this is by using tally marks.
Organise and Represent Data: We put the information into a chart or graph to make it easy to see the results. We will learn to use a pictograph.
Analyse Data: We look at our graph and answer questions about what we found.
Key Concept 1: Collecting with Tally Marks A tally mark is a quick way to count.
It is just a straight line: | When we get to the fifth one, we draw a line across the first four. This makes a little 'gate' and helps us count in fives! |||| So, |||| =
5. This makes counting big numbers much easier. For example, the number 8 in tally marks would be: |||| ||| (a group of 5 and 3 more).
