This week, we will explore the exciting world of Data Handling! Data is just a special word for information. Every day, we see and use information to make decisions. For example, when you decide which game to play with your friends, you might quickly count who wants to play soccer and who wants to play hide-and-seek. That's data handling! In South Africa, people use data for many things: a spaza shop owner counts which sweets sell the most to know what to order, a doctor counts how many children are healthy in a community, and we can even count the different colours of taxis we see on the way to school.
What is Data Handling?
Data handling is a three-step process: Collect: We gather information or 'data'. We can do this by asking questions (this is called a survey) or by observing and counting things.
Organise and Represent: We put the information into a format that is easy to read. We can use tally marks, lists, pictographs, or bar graphs.
Interpret: We 'read' our graph or chart to understand what it tells us and answer questions about it.
Step 1 & 2: Collecting and Organising with Tally Marks A tally mark is a quick way to count. One mark ( | ) means one item. When we get to five, we make a group to make counting easier.
It looks like this: `||||` The fifth line crosses the other four. This group of five is much faster to count!
