Lesson summary

This week in Life Skills, we're going to revisit and strengthen what we learned in Week

6. Week 6 focused on Personal Hygiene and Keeping our Environment Clean. These topics are incredibly important for staying healthy, feeling good about ourselves, and making sure our homes, schools, and communities are pleasant places to live. In South Africa, where we face challenges like limited resources in some areas, understanding and practicing good hygiene and cleanliness are especially vital for preventing the spread of germs and diseases. Imagine how much better our playgrounds would be if everyone helped to keep them clean!

Lesson notes

2.1 Personal Hygiene Personal hygiene means keeping yourself clean and healthy. This includes things like washing your hands, brushing your teeth, bathing regularly, and wearing clean clothes. Good personal hygiene helps to prevent the spread of germs, which are tiny little things that can make us sick.

Washing Hands: Imagine you've been playing outside. You've touched the ground, shared toys, and maybe even sneezed into your hand. Your hands are now covered in germs! Washing your hands with soap and water washes those germs away. It's like giving your hands a shower! The soap helps to lift the germs off your skin, and the water washes them down the drain. Think of it like washing mud off your shoes. The soap loosens the mud, and the water washes it away. We should wash our hands before eating, after using the toilet, after playing outside, and after touching anything dirty. Why is soap important? Soap contains special ingredients that attach to germs and lift them away from your skin. Water alone doesn't do this as well.

How to wash hands properly: Wet your hands with clean water, apply soap, rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice!), rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry with a clean towel.

Brushing Teeth: Brushing your teeth removes food particles and plaque (a sticky film that forms on your teeth) that can cause cavities (holes in your teeth). Cavities can be painful and make it hard to eat. We should brush our teeth at least twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed. Why is brushing important? Brushing removes food that germs love to eat, preventing them from making acid that eats away at your teeth.

How to brush your teeth: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush all surfaces of your teeth – front, back, and top – for about two minutes. Don't forget to brush your tongue!

Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering regularly removes dirt, sweat, and germs from your body. This helps to prevent body odor and skin infections. 2.2 Keeping Our Environment Clean Keeping our environment clean means making sure our surroundings are free from dirt, litter, and pollution. This includes our homes, schools, streets, parks, and even the air we breathe. A clean environment is important for our health and well-being.

Littering: Littering is when we throw rubbish on the ground instead of putting it in a bin. Litter can attract pests (like rats and flies) that spread disease, and it makes our environment look ugly. Imagine if everyone in your class threw their sweet wrappers on the floor after break. It would be a messy and unhealthy place to be!

Solution: Always put your rubbish in a bin. If you can't find a bin, keep your rubbish with you until you can find one.

Cleaning Our Homes and Classrooms: Sweeping, mopping, dusting, and wiping surfaces help to remove dirt, dust, and germs from our homes and classrooms.

Example: Imagine your classroom floor is covered in crumbs after lunch. Sweeping the floor removes the crumbs and prevents pests from being attracted.

Recycling: Recycling is when we collect used materials (like paper, plastic, and glass) and turn them into new products. Recycling helps to conserve resources and reduce pollution. In South Africa, recycling initiatives are becoming increasingly important to manage waste effectively.

Example: Instead of throwing away an empty plastic bottle, we can put it in a recycling bin. The plastic can then be used to make new bottles or other products. 2.3 Germs Germs are tiny living things that can cause disease. Some germs are bacteria, and some are viruses. We can't see them with our eyes, but they are everywhere! They can spread through the air, through touch, and through contaminated food and water.

How germs spread: Coughing, sneezing, touching dirty surfaces, and not washing hands can all spread germs.

How to protect ourselves: Washing hands, covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze, and avoiding touching our face can help to protect us from germs. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Name two times during the day when it is especially important to wash your hands.

Solution: It is especially important to wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet. Washing before eating prevents you from swallowing germs along with your food, and washing after using the toilet removes germs that may have gotten on your hands.

Question 2: You see a classmate throwing their empty juice box on the playground. What should you do?

Solution: Gently remind your classmate that it is important to put rubbish in the bin. You can say something like, "Excuse me, Lerato, but it's better to put your juice box in the bin to keep the playground clean." If there is no bin nearby, offer to help them find one or suggest they keep it with them until they find a bin.

Question 3: List one thing you can do at home to help keep your environment clean.
