This week, we will become 'data detectives'! We will explore the exciting world of Data Handling. Data handling is a way to collect information, sort it out, and show it in a way that is easy to understand. In South Africa, we are surrounded by information (data). We see it when we look at the different colours of taxis on the road, the types of fruit sold at the market, or even the favourite soccer teams in our class, like Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. Learning to handle data helps us make sense of the world, answer interesting questions, and make smart choices.
What is Data Handling? Data is just a fancy word for information. When we handle data, we follow a few simple steps: Ask a Question: What do we want to find out? (e.g., What is our class's favourite fruit?)
Collect Data: We gather the information. A great way to do this is with tally marks.
Organise and Represent Data: We sort the information and draw a picture of it. We will use tables and pictographs.
Analyse Data: We look at our picture (graph) and answer questions about it.
Step 1 & 2: Collecting Data with Tally Marks A tally mark is a quick way to count.
It's just a straight line: | When we get to the fifth one, we draw a line through the first four to make a 'gate': |||| This makes it easy to count in fives!
